Nellie Hennessy, together with her brother Herbert, participated in the Adelaide art world from their teenage years onwards. They began exhibiting their art works as young adults in galleries, and as part of the Royal Society of Arts. Nellie’s work won awards and was often highly praised, especially her animal portraits.
She trained as an artist under Marie Tuck and attended the Royal Drawing School based in London. In her mid to late 30s, photography became a passion for both her and her brother. They set up a studio at 126 Goodwood Rd, Goodwood and later in Barmera. At one stage Nellie trained as a photographic colourist and shortly after, in 1947, they advertised “Photographs coloured naturally”.
In 2007 a book Nellie Hennessy and Herbert Hennessy : brother and sister artists , was published by Wakefield Press.
