After the death of her husband, Jeremiah Bryant, a sawyer, in Melbourne in 1857, Jane Bryant and her two children moved to the gold-fields of Castlemaine. There she set up a photographic studio on Mostyn St. The business was short-lived as in late May of that same year she died of an epileptic fit.
